AI Recommendation Intelligence: What Actually Gets Cited by AI Systems

By Sadiq Dantanko, Founder of Dala Forge. Published September 2026.

Direct answer: A business AI systems know exists and a business AI systems actually cite and recommend are two different populations, and the overlap between them is smaller than most businesses assume. Ranking on Google does not reliably translate to AI citation — one major study found only 12% of URLs cited by AI tools also appear in Google's top 10. Worse, different AI systems barely agree with each other: only 11% of domains get cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. "AI visibility" is not one target. It is several different, only loosely related targets, and the data below shows why treating it as one thing is the single biggest mistake in how businesses approach this.

Every figure below comes from a named, dated study — the same evidence standard we apply to our own client work.

If a business ranks well on Google, does that mean AI systems will cite it too?

Direct answer: Not reliably, and the gap is widening. Ahrefs' analysis of 15,000 queries found only 12% of URLs cited by AI tools overlap with Google's top-10 organic results. A separate Ahrefs study of 863,000 SERPs in March 2026 found only 38% of Google's own AI Overview citations come from the top 10 organic results for that query — down from 76% less than a year earlier. Moz's 40,000-keyword study found a similar pattern: 88% of AI Mode citations do not come from the organic top 10. Most strikingly, one analysis found 80% of ChatGPT-cited URLs don't rank in Google's top 100 at all — meaning classic SEO ranking and AI citation are, increasingly, separate systems answering to separate logic.

The mechanical reason is that AI Overviews use what Google calls "query fan-out" — a single question gets rewritten into several sub-queries, each run separately, with citations pulled across all the results. That structurally breaks the old assumption that the page ranking #1 for a search term is the page an AI answer will cite for the equivalent AI query.

Do ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini all cite the same sources?

Direct answer: No — and the disagreement between them is larger than most businesses expect. A synthesis of six major studies covering more than 680 million citations found only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. A separate 90-day study tracking 300,000+ citations for six B2B SaaS brands across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overview and Google AI Mode found the citation profiles for the same brand were different enough across platforms to "look like different brands." Citation volume for the same brand has been documented to vary by up to 615x between platforms. One study of 34,234 AI responses found a 46-times difference in brand citation rates between platforms alone — ChatGPT cited brands just 0.59% of the time, Perplexity sat at 13.05%, and Grok came in at 27%.

The platforms also differ in how many sources they cite per answer and how fresh those sources need to be. Perplexity averages 21.9 citations per response, more than double ChatGPT's 10.4. Claude has the longest freshness tolerance of the major platforms — roughly three times more likely than ChatGPT to cite content that's 2–4 weeks old — while Perplexity performs real-time retrieval and weights very recent content heavily for time-sensitive queries. A business optimized for one platform's citation behaviour is not automatically optimized for the others.

What actually determines whether an AI system trusts a source at all?

Direct answer: Citation share is extremely concentrated, and what earns it is specific. The AI Platform Citation Source Index — synthesizing six independent studies covering over 680 million citations between August 2024 and April 2026 — found the top 15 domains capture roughly 68% of all consolidated AI citation share, with Reddit alone accounting for close to 40%. Within that concentrated landscape, research on what content actually earns citation converges on a consistent pattern: original data and proprietary research is the highest-leverage content type across every major platform studied. Content with a direct, specific answer in the first few sentences of a section outperforms content that buries its point in the middle of a paragraph. FAQ sections marked up with FAQPage schema are consistently identified as one of the highest-impact single changes for AI citation rates, because they map directly onto the question-and-answer format AI retrieval systems are built to match.

The same research is equally specific about what gets excluded: JavaScript-rendered content that crawlers can't parse, content that requires a login, vague or hedged language rather than specific claims, and pure marketing copy without verifiable factual substance. This is the same distinction our methodology draws between a business's own claims and independently verifiable evidence — AI systems are, in effect, applying that same filter automatically.

What does this mean for a Nigerian business specifically?

Direct answer: Nigeria's search landscape makes this more consequential, not less. Google holds approximately 98.7% of Nigerian search traffic — one of the highest concentrations measured anywhere — which means Google's own AI Overviews carry unusual weight in how Nigerian consumers get answered. But the data above shows that ranking well organically in Nigeria's Google-dominated market doesn't guarantee inclusion in the AI-generated answer sitting above those organic results, since AI Overview citation increasingly draws from a wider, query-fanned-out set of sources rather than the literal top 10. A Nigerian business's own Google dominance as a market fact and its individual AI citation status are two different things that have to be measured separately.

What does this mean for how a business should approach AI visibility?

Direct answer: Treat it as multiple, separately-measured targets rather than one. This is precisely why our AI Visibility Audit tests representation across multiple AI systems individually rather than reporting a single blended "AI visibility score," and why AI Recommendation Monitoring exists as an ongoing service rather than a one-time report — given how differently each platform behaves and how quickly citation patterns shift (the AI Overview top-10 correlation alone dropped from 76% to 38% in under a year), a snapshot audit has a short shelf life on its own.

Frequently asked

If a business ranks well on Google, will it get cited by AI systems too?

Not reliably — only 12% of AI-cited URLs overlap with Google's top 10, and 80% of ChatGPT-cited URLs don't rank in Google's top 100 at all.

Do all AI systems cite the same sources?

No. Only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, and the same brand's citation profile can look completely different across platforms.

What kind of content actually earns AI citations?

Original data and proprietary research, direct structured answers, and FAQPage schema consistently outperform vague marketing copy or JavaScript-only content.
